## Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

### Do I need to register or install anything?

No. Just add the bot to your group chat and type /newtrip. Everyone joins through Telegram — no separate account or app to install.

### Do I need a receipt to add an expense?

No. Send a receipt or type what you paid for — for example, “I paid $100 for beer.” SplitBill understands both.

### What if the receipt is hard to read?

SplitBill checks that the items add up to the total. If something isn’t recognized correctly, you can edit the numbers or add items manually.

### Can we split expenses in different ways?

Yes. Split equally, use custom shares, or let everyone claim what they had. Shared items can be divided however you like.

### How are tips, taxes, and service charges split?

They’re split proportionally to each person’s share. If you had 30% of the order, you pay 30% of the extras too.

### Can we use different currencies?

Yes. Add expenses in different currencies and SplitBill converts them to the trip’s base currency using the rate for the expense date.

### What about friends who don’t use Telegram?

Add them by name as guests. They don’t need an account or the app — their share is tracked with everyone else’s.

### Is it free?

Manual expenses are always free. Receipt scanning includes a free allowance, and you can buy more scans with Telegram Stars.

## Privacy

SplitBill runs inside Telegram, so there is no separate account and nothing new to install. This page covers both this website and the bot.

### This website

The site stores only your theme preference in your browser. Cloudflare automatically provides privacy-first Web Analytics and Real User Measurements (RUM) for page views and performance. Its beacon uses no cookies or browser storage and does not track individual visitors across sites.

### The bot

SplitBill signs you in with your Telegram profile — no passwords, no forms. Receipt photos are processed to extract text and translate it. Trips, splits, and debts exist so your group can settle up; you can ask the bot to delete a trip’s data when it’s over.

### Questions

## Terms of Service

SplitBill is a Telegram bot and companion website that reads receipts and calculates shared expenses. By using the bot or website, you agree to these terms.

### Scope of service

SplitBill provides optical character recognition (OCR) for receipt photos, currency conversion assistance, and expense balancing calculations for group chats inside Telegram. The service is designed to help friends, travel companions, and roommates track who paid for what and calculate net balances with fewer bank transfers.

### Informational calculations and no custody

SplitBill is a calculation utility, not a bank, licensed financial institution, money transmitter, or payment processor. We do not hold custody of group funds, store monetary balances, or execute money transfers. All monetary settlements occur entirely outside SplitBill between group members using their own preferred payment methods (such as cash, bank transfers, or third-party payment apps). While we strive for computational precision, OCR and automated calculations are assistive tools: you are responsible for reviewing and confirming amounts before settling debts.

### Acceptable use and bot access

You agree to use SplitBill only for lawful group expense calculations. You may not use automated scripts to spam or scrape the bot, reverse engineer our processing systems, or disrupt services for other people. We reserve the right to rate-limit, suspend, or terminate access for accounts that violate these rules or abuse Telegram's platform standards.

### Free tier and digital purchases

Manual expense tracking in group chats is completely free. Receipt scanning includes a complimentary free allowance. Additional receipt OCR scans may be purchased directly inside Telegram using Telegram Stars. All digital token purchases are processed by Telegram and are subject to Telegram's Terms of Service.

### Governing law

These Terms of Service and any disputes arising from your use of SplitBill shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Georgia, without regard to conflict of law principles.

### Updates and contact

We may update these terms occasionally to reflect product changes or legal requirements. Updated terms take effect upon publication on this page. If you have questions about these terms, contact us via Telegram at @spbill_bot or by email at support@botsplit.com.

## Guides & comparisons

### [Splitwise Alternative: Why We Split Bills in Telegram Instead](https://botsplit.com/compare/splitwise-alternative/)

- **URL**: https://botsplit.com/compare/splitwise-alternative/

Splitwise spent a decade defining expense sharing. Then came receipt paywalls, daily entry limits, and another login screen nobody wanted. Here is where Splitwise still wins, and why a Telegram bot works better for friends.

#### Splitwise vs Tricount vs Spreadsheets vs SplitBill

| Feature | Splitwise | Tricount | Manual Spreadsheets | SplitBill (@spbill_bot) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Platform & access | Standalone mobile app (iOS, Android) and web | Standalone mobile app (iOS, Android) and web | Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel via app or browser | Telegram Mini App (zero install, iOS, Android, Desktop) |
| Account setup | Mandatory email, password, and profile per person | No account for basic use; email required for sync | Google or Microsoft account required for editing | Zero sign-up (your Telegram profile is your account) |
| Adding friends without accounts | Requires sending email invites or phone contacts | Shareable web link to join the shared list | Share link; non-technical friends struggle on mobile | Add guests by name in two seconds without registration |
| Receipt scanning & OCR | Locked behind Splitwise Pro ($39.99/year or $4.99/month) | Photo attachment only (no automated item extraction) | None (100% manual typing) | Multimodal Vision AI (line itemization & foreign translation included) |
| Free tier expense limits | Capped at 3 to 10 expenses per day with countdown timers | Unlimited basic expense entries with banner ads | Unlimited entries | Unlimited manual expenses, zero daily countdown timers |
| Multi-currency conversion | Pro subscription required for automatic live rates | Single currency per tricount on free tier | Manual GOOGLEFINANCE formulas that frequently break | Automatic rate freeze on transaction date (no FX markup) |
| Debt simplification | Reduces transfers between group members | Basic balance netting | Requires manual formulas to net out who owes whom | Eliminates circular debts (e.g., 4 people settle in at most 3 transfers) |
| Group chat integration | External app; must paste summary links into chat | External app; must paste links into chat | External link; difficult to view or edit on mobile screens | Native in group chats (instant balance updates and claim buttons) |

#### Who this comparison is for

You planned a weekend trip with four friends. You bought dinner on Friday. On Saturday morning, you ask everyone to install an app, confirm their emails, and friend you on a separate social network just to log twenty dollars for pizza.

Two people do it immediately. One forgets their password. The fourth person refuses to download another app because their phone storage is full. By Sunday night, nobody has logged groceries and someone is doing math in the group chat anyway.

We built SplitBill (botsplit.com, @spbill_bot on Telegram) because the group chat is already where the trip happens. You do not need another social network for your receipts.

#### Where Splitwise and Tricount still make sense

Splitwise has existed since 2011, and that decade of engineering shows in specific areas. If your use case matches these, stick with Splitwise.

First, year-round household accounting. If you share an apartment with roommates for three years and split electricity, Wi-Fi, cleaning supplies, and monthly rent, Splitwise gives you a desktop web dashboard with CSV exports and charts. Telegram bots are built for chats, not three-year bookkeeping archives.

Second, direct payment links in the United States. Splitwise integrates with Venmo and PayPal so American roommates can settle balances directly inside the app. SplitBill calculates who owes whom, but you send the money using whatever banking app or cash transfer you already prefer.

Third, complex recurring bills. Splitwise handles repeating monthly subscriptions on fixed dates automatically. Tricount also offers a simple standalone list for groups that do not use Telegram.

#### Multimodal Vision OCR vs legacy receipt paywalls

Legacy receipt scanning in apps like Splitwise relies on rigid templates or locks receipt capture behind a paid subscription ($39.99 per year). Worse still, the free tier caps you at 3 to 10 entries per day with artificial countdown timers.

SplitBill takes a different approach with Multimodal Vision AI. You take a photo of any receipt, whether it is a crumpled register check, a handwritten bill, or a screenshot of a digital invoice. The AI vision model reads line item names, itemized prices, subtotal, tax rates, and service fees in seconds.

Better yet, it handles foreign menus and non-Latin alphabets without breaking. If your receipt is in Thai, Georgian, Spanish, French, German, or Vietnamese, the bot translates foreign dish names into your primary language. It automatically validates that the sum of line items matches the check total before letting diners claim their food with a single tap.

#### The zero-install Telegram Mini App advantage

The biggest failure point in shared finances is onboarding friction. Forcing five friends to download a 150-megabyte app over slow roaming cellular data at an airport kills participation.

Because SplitBill runs as a Telegram Mini App, opening the split interface takes less than a second. There is nothing to install, no password to recover, and no email confirmation link to click. Your Telegram profile serves as your authenticated identity.

If someone in the group does not use Telegram, you can add them as a guest by name in two seconds. Their share is tracked in the settlement math, and friends can settle on their behalf without forcing them into an external app.

#### Which tool should your group pick?

Pick Splitwise if you manage long-term multi-year apartment rent with permanent roommates, need desktop spreadsheet exports, or rely on Venmo integrations in the US.

Pick Tricount if your group does not use Telegram and only needs a basic offline list with banner ads.

Pick SplitBill (@spbill_bot) if you travel with friends, eat out together, share weekend rentals, or want zero onboarding friction, free receipt OCR, and instant settlement in group chats.

#### Frequently Asked Questions

- **Is SplitBill a direct replacement for Splitwise?** Yes, for trips, dinners, and group events where friends already communicate in Telegram. If you need multi-year apartment bookkeeping with desktop spreadsheets, Splitwise offers deeper accounting archives.
- **Do my friends need to create an account to use SplitBill?** No, nobody needs to create an account or download an extra app. Your Telegram profile serves as your identity, and friends without Telegram can be added as guest names.
- **How does receipt scanning compare to Splitwise Pro?** Splitwise locks receipt scanning behind a $39.99/year Pro tier. SplitBill includes Multimodal Vision OCR directly in the bot, transcribing itemized lines, translating foreign menus, and validating totals.
- **Is manual expense tracking free without daily limits?** Yes, logging manual expenses is always free without daily entry limits or artificial countdown timers.
- **How does SplitBill handle foreign currencies?** SplitBill converts foreign expenses to your trip base currency using mid-market exchange rates frozen on the purchase date, preventing unfair market swings during settlement.

### [How to Split Travel Expenses on Group Trips Without Arguments](https://botsplit.com/guides/split-travel-expenses/)

- **URL**: https://botsplit.com/guides/split-travel-expenses/

Group vacations test friendships during checkout, not on the beach. Here is how to track shared villas, rental cars, and restaurant checks across mixed currencies without spreadsheet arguments.

#### The three classic vacation money headaches

Every group trip encounters money friction sooner or later. Most disagreements come from three predictable patterns:

The phantom exchange rate. Someone pays for breakfast in Thai Baht on Monday. On Friday, two friends argue about whether the dollar was worth 35 or 36 Baht when the mango smoothies were ordered.

The mental swap. One person covers a forty-dollar taxi and says: you get breakfast tomorrow. Breakfast turns out to cost eighty dollars, and both people spend the afternoon harboring unspoken resentment.

The delayed calculation. Friends head home with pockets full of crumpled receipts, promising to sort everything out next week. Three weeks pass, debts remain unsettled, and someone ends up eating a two-hundred-dollar loss.

#### A worked example: 4 friends, 5 days, 3 currencies

Here is how a real trip works with fair math instead of guesswork. Four friends (Anna, Ben, Clara, and David) spent five days traveling together. They set USD as the trip base currency.

Ben paid $600 for the holiday apartment on day one. Anna paid ฿4,280 THB for dinner on day two. Clara paid €184 EUR for train tickets on day four. David did not put down a card upfront.

**TRIP EXPENSE LOG (BANGKOK & CHIANG MAI)** (BASE CURRENCY: USD · 4 TRAVELERS)
- **Villa booking (Ben paid)**: $600.00 (Split 4 ways: $150.00 each)
- **Night market dinner (Anna paid)**: ฿4,280 ($120.00) (Rate frozen: 35.67 ฿/$ on Mar 12)
- **Train passes (Clara paid)**: €184.00 ($198.72) (Rate frozen: 1.08 $/€ on Mar 14)
- **TOTAL TRIP EXPENSES**: $918.72
- *FAIR SHARE PER PERSON: $229.68*

Look at the balances: Ben paid $600.00, Anna paid $120.00, Clara paid $198.72, and David paid $0.00.

Without smart settlement, Anna owes Ben money, David owes Anna money, and Clara owes Ben money. Six cross-transfers confuse everyone.

With circular debt elimination, the balance collapses into three direct payments: David pays Ben $229.68, Anna pays Ben $109.68, and Clara pays Ben $30.96. Ben receives his full $370.32 reimbursement, and the entire group is settled.

#### How smart debt simplification cuts out extra transfers

When everyone takes turns paying for different group activities, back-and-forth IOUs multiply fast. Among 4 friends, there can be up to 6 separate two-way debts; in a group of 6 friends, up to 15 separate money transfers back and forth.

SplitBill eliminates circular debts automatically in three straightforward steps:

First, it calculates each person's net balance: total paid minus total spent. Across the whole group, all net balances always add up to zero.

Second, it separates the group into people who are owed money (paid more than their share) and people who owe money (spent more than they paid).

Third, it matches the person who owes the most with the person who is owed the most until every balance reaches zero. Because each transfer settles at least one person's tab completely, a group of 4 friends never needs more than 3 transfers, and 6 friends never need more than 5.

For our four travelers, six tangled IOUs collapse into three clean payments, avoiding extra bank transfers and fees.

#### Multi-currency conversion without bank FX markups

When traveling internationally, banks and credit card issuers routinely add a 2.5% to 4% foreign transaction fee on every card swipe. Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) prompts at payment terminals can extract an extra 5% to 8% markup.

SplitBill prevents currency friction among travel companions by converting foreign expenses (such as EUR, GEL, PLN, or THB) into the trip base currency using mid-market reference exchange rates frozen on the exact date of purchase.

By locking rates to the transaction date, nobody gains an unfair advantage or suffers a penalty when currency markets fluctuate later in the week. The financial record reflects the exact purchasing power on the day the expense occurred.

#### Roommate and shared accommodation expense handling

Splitting vacation villas, Airbnb rentals, or shared flats equally is often unfair when bedrooms differ in size and comfort. If one couple takes the master bedroom with an ocean-view balcony and private bathroom, while two friends sleep in a twin room or on a living room sofa bed, a 50/50 split causes resentment.

The fairest way to handle shared lodging is weighted proportion by room value or square footage. For example, in a $1,200 weekend rental with two bedrooms, the master bedroom couple might cover 60% ($720, or $360 each) while the second bedroom occupants cover 40% ($480, or $240 each).

SplitBill supports custom item weights and shares, allowing groups to assign exact accommodation proportions while splitting communal pantry groceries, coffee, and cleaning fees evenly.

#### Three practical rules for peaceful trip finances

Rule 1: Rotate who puts down the card, but log the amount immediately. Keep the receipt in your phone photo roll, not in your backpack pocket. If an expense is not logged within an hour, people forget.

Rule 2: Freeze currency rates on the day of purchase. Exchange rates bounce around constantly. Freezing the rate on the transaction date prevents silly arguments about market fluctuations.

Rule 3: Settle before parting ways at the airport. Once everyone boards their flight home, motivation drops to zero. Open your balances, send the transfers while waiting at the gate, and arrive home with clean slates.

#### Why a Telegram bot beats a shared spreadsheet

Spreadsheets look neat on a laptop screen at home. Standing on a noisy sidewalk with spotty 4G, nobody wants to pinch-zoom spreadsheet cells or fix broken formula ranges.

SplitBill (@spbill_bot on Telegram, botsplit.com) lives in the Telegram chat you are already using to coordinate meeting spots and dinner plans. Send a photo of the receipt, and the bot parses items without anyone opening Google Drive.

#### Frequently Asked Questions

- **How does smart debt simplification work?** It calculates each person's net balance (total paid minus total spent) and matches who owes the most with who is owed the most, so a group of 4 people always settles up in at most 3 transfers (or at most 5 transfers for 6 people).
- **How should we handle foreign currency cash expenses?** Type the cash amount and currency directly into the chat, like “Paid 400 THB for tuk-tuk.” SplitBill looks up the exchange rate for that exact date and logs the equivalent in your trip currency.
- **How can roommates split rooms with different sizes?** Assign weighted shares based on room size or amenities so master bedroom occupants cover a proportional percentage while communal groceries remain equally divided.
- **What if one friend does not drink alcohol or skips an activity?** Assign specific items to the people who shared them instead of dividing the total equally. SplitBill lets group members claim dishes while dividing shared items like appetizers evenly.
- **Can we settle balances in different currencies?** Yes, you can settle debts in any agreed currency. The bot tells each person their net balance in the trip base currency, and friends can pay each other via cash, local bank transfers, or card.
- **What happens if one traveler does not use Telegram?** Add that traveler as a guest by typing their name into the trip. You can assign expenses and check their balance without requiring them to install anything.

### [How to Split a Dinner Bill Fairly: Itemized, Equal, and Tip Math](https://botsplit.com/guides/split-dinner-bill/)

- **URL**: https://botsplit.com/guides/split-dinner-bill/

Splitting a restaurant check should take thirty seconds, not twenty minutes of phone calculators and awkward glances. Here is when to split equally, how proportional tax math works, and how to handle friends who skip drinks.

#### The three ways to split a restaurant check

Most dinner arguments happen because people assume different ground rules before sitting down. Here are the three ways to split, along with when each method makes sense:

1. The Equal Split. You take the final check and divide by the number of heads. This works for tapas, family-style sharing, or pizza nights where everyone ate roughly the same food. It is fast and relaxed.

2. Claim-Your-Items. Everyone pays for what they ordered, plus their proportional slice of tip and tax. This is fair when one person orders a nine-dollar pasta and another orders forty-dollar oysters and three cocktails.

3. Custom Shares. Useful when couples share a main dish, someone brought cash, or one person generously covers wine for the table while others split the entrees.

#### The tip, tax, and service charge math: why equal extras are unfair

Splitting food item-by-item but dividing tax, tip, and service charges equally is flawed math. It penalizes light eaters and gives heavy spenders an accidental subsidy.

Consider this real receipt: a table bill of ฿1,210 ($33.92), consisting of food items, 10% service charge, and 7% VAT.

**RESTAURANT RECEIPT: PROPORTIONAL BREAKDOWN** (TABLE OF 2 · 10% SERVICE + 7% TAX INCLUDED)
- **Alice: Pad Thai & Iced Tea**: $8.00 (25% of food subtotal ($32.00))
- **Bob: Crab Rice, Tom Yum, Curry, Beer**: $24.00 (75% of food subtotal ($32.00))
- **Combined Tax & Service (17%)**: $5.44 (Food subtotal $32.00)
- **TOTAL BILL**: $37.44
- *FAIR SPLIT: ALICE PAYS $9.36 · BOB PAYS $28.08*

If you divided the $5.44 tax and service charge fifty-fifty ($2.72 each), Alice would pay $10.72 and Bob would pay $26.72. Alice would be paying an effective 34% surcharge on her eight-dollar noodles.

The fair approach is a proportional split: each person's share of tax and tip matches their share of the food subtotal. Alice ordered 25% of the food ($8 of $32), so she covers 25% of the tax and service ($1.36). Bob ordered 75% of the food ($24 of $32), so he covers 75% of the extras ($4.08).

SplitBill (@spbill_bot on Telegram, botsplit.com) calculates this proportional split automatically. Snap the receipt, select your dishes, and the bot allocates extras proportionally down to the penny.

#### Itemized receipt photo OCR with Multimodal Vision AI

When the paper check arrives at the table, nobody wants to type fifteen separate dishes into a phone calculator. Printed thermal receipts are often crumpled, faded, or printed in low-contrast fonts under dim restaurant lighting.

SplitBill uses Multimodal Vision AI to extract line items directly from a photo. The model detects item descriptions, quantities, unit prices, subtotal sums, sales taxes, and mandatory service charges.

If dining abroad, foreign menu descriptions are translated into your primary language. Everyone taps their own dishes on their phone screen to claim them, while shared appetizers or dessert plates are split among selected diners.

#### Non-drinker alcohol separation and dietary fairness

Beverages, craft beers, cocktails, and wine bottles frequently account for 40% to 60% of an evening's total restaurant bill. Forcing friends who only ordered iced tea or sparkling water to split an alcohol-heavy tab equally is the fastest way to ruin a dinner.

Claiming items individually isolates alcohol costs instantly. Drinkers can split cocktail pitchers or shared wine bottles exclusively among themselves, while non-drinkers pay only for their entrees, soft drinks, and their exact proportional tax and tip.

This removes all social awkwardness at checkout: nobody has to make an uncomfortable announcement about not drinking alcohol.

#### The penny problem: fair cent rounding without missing cents

When dividing amounts among group members, fractional cents inevitably arise. For instance, dividing a $100.00 check equally among three people results in $33.333... per person.

If each person pays $33.33, the total collected is $99.99, leaving a one-cent shortfall against the cash register. If each person pays $33.34, the table overpays by two cents.

SplitBill handles cent rounding automatically. Each person's share is rounded down to whole cents first, and any 1 or 2 leftover pennies go to the biggest spenders (or the card payer) so every individual share adds up to the exact receipt total down to the last cent.

#### How to handle awkward restaurant edge cases

The person leaving early. Ask them to check the menu price of what they had, add twenty percent for tax and tip, and send that amount to the chat before stepping out.

The single cardholder. When the restaurant refuses to split payments across six cards, have one person tap their card. Log the receipt into SplitBill immediately so the cardholder collects exact reimbursements without chasing friends for days.

Discounts and promotional vouchers. SplitBill allocates percentage discounts or fixed-value coupons proportionally across all qualifying diners, ensuring everyone benefits fairly.

#### Frequently Asked Questions

- **What is the fairest way to split a restaurant bill with big price differences?** The fairest approach is itemized claiming with proportional tax and tip. Each person covers their exact food dishes, and extras are distributed based on each diner's percentage of the subtotal.
- **Can SplitBill read foreign language restaurant receipts?** Yes, the bot translates foreign menus into your language and parses item names, quantities, and prices automatically.
- **How does SplitBill separate alcohol from non-drinkers?** Drinkers claim alcoholic beverages individually or share them among other drinkers, leaving non-drinkers to pay only for their food and soft drinks.
- **How does fair cent rounding work when dividing odd amounts?** Each person's share is rounded down to whole cents first, and any 1 or 2 leftover pennies go to the biggest spenders so individual payments always add up to the exact printed check total.
- **What if multiple people shared an appetizer or bottle of wine?** You can assign any single item to multiple people in SplitBill. The bot divides that specific item equally among the designated people while keeping personal entrees separate.
- **Do we need the physical paper receipt to split the dinner?** No, a paper receipt is not required. You can photograph the paper check, upload a screenshot of a digital invoice, or type your expenses manually.
